What is the most difficult tile to install?
Glass and natural stone tiles tend to be the most difficult to install. Glass can be challenging to install because it's possible to see the thinset through the tile in some cases, so it needs to be applied very evenly. Natural stone requires experience and expertise to install correctly. It's a more involved process than installing ceramic or porcelain tile.
How often do you need to clean tile floors?
In general, sweeping and mopping a tile floor once or twice a week is enough to keep the tile clean. However, some types of tile floors, such as natural stone, may need extra maintenance.
Ceramic
Ceramic is easy to maintain. All you need to do is clean it regularly with an all purpose cleaner and a cloth, sponge or mop. Stay away from products that contain harsh chemicals. Acids and ammonia can damage your tile's surface and grout. Sealing your grout regularly can help you extend the life of your grout.
Porcelain
Porcelain is similar to ceramic in that it usually requires very little upkeep and is easy to clean. You can use most natural and chemical cleaning products but you should always check the label to be sure that it is safe to use on porcelain. Ammonia and bleach may affect the color of your tile. Try using one part vinegar and one part water. Never use steel wool, a hard-bristle brush or other abrasive tools to clean your porcelain tile.
Glass
Glass tile is undeniably beautiful, but it is prone to picking up fingerprints and water spots that can mar its perfectly shiny appearance. You can use glass cleaner to clean your glass tile. If you notice hard water spots or chalky residue on your glass tile you can spray glass cleaner onto them and let sit for up to 15 minutes before buffing with a microfiber cloth.
Natural Stone
An important part of maintaining natural stone is taking a good look at your tile and evaluating its condition so you can determine what type of maintenance it needs. You will want to dust and mop your natural stone frequently in order to prevent scratches and stains. Choose cleaning products that are compatible with the type of stone you have. Acid based cleaners, even homemade cleaners containing vinegar and lemon juice should never be used on natural stone as they are likely to cause damage. If the finish has changed over time, restoring your floor before sealing it will give you the best results. It is crucial to seal natural stone tile. You will need to reseal your tile every few years.
Our resources page has two videos explaining the differences between porcelain and natural stone.
Do floor tiles crack easily?
Tile flooring that has been installed properly doesn't crack easily but it's still possible. If you drop something heavy directly onto the floor, such as an iron skillet, there is a chance you'll chip or crack the tile. If the substrate under the tile is uneven or if the concrete didn't cure correctly it can lead to cracks over time.
Why does tile need grout?
Grout is necessary to fill the joints between tiles. It prevents dirt and other debris from entering the spaces between tiles, makes the entire tile installation stronger and more rigid and creates a neater and more orderly appearance. For more information on grout check out our informational videos on our resources page.
How long are tiles supposed to last?
The lifespan of tile often varies depending on its quality and whether it was installed and maintained correctly. Your tile should last anywhere from 20 to 50 years.
Is tile water-proof?
Unless your tile is pool-rated, it's likely water-resistant rather than water-proof. Some types of natural stone are porous and need to be sealed so that they don't absorb water, especially if they are being used as shower tile.
What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile?
Ceramic and porcelain are very similar, but porcelain tends to be stronger and more durable due to its slightly different manufacturing process. In comparison to ceramic tile, porcelain tile is made from a more refined clay and is fired at a higher temperature, contributing to increased density. Porcelain is also more water-resistant than ceramic, although both ceramic and porcelain tiles are typically finished with a glazed surface coating that improves their water-resistance. In terms of appearance, porcelain and ceramic tiles are nearly impossible to tell apart. Both are available in a wide variety of colors, shapes, sizes and patterns.
What is a rectified tile?
A rectified tile has precisely-cut edges that allow for minimal grout lines and a clean, continuous look.
Can I install a tile floor over an existing tile floor?
While it is possible to install a tile floor on top of your existing tile, it is not recommended. To give your new tile the longest lifespan possible, it is best to rip up the old tile before installing it.
